Chronic Pain Management

Chronic pain is a potentially devastating disorder that may create significant alterations in quality of life and frequently impacts all areas of functioning, such as employment, financial, social relationships, family roles and daily activities. Patients with chronic pain frequently have problems with sleep, depression, irritability, anxiety, social isolation, sexual functioning and fatigue.

Chronic pain may have no clearly demonstrable physical or laboratory pathology. Our philosophy is that pain exists when the patient says it does, including when psychological factors are judged to have an important or even primary role in perpetuating chronic pain. This stance of non-judgment and acceptance allows us to focus our efforts on alleviating suffering, which invariably accompanies chronic pain syndromes.

Services may include pre-surgical assessment, education, stress management training, relaxation training, cognitive-behavioral treatment, individual psychotherapy, and/or referral to our Chronic Pain Management Group (CPMG). Psychological services are not a “last resort” treatment or an alternative to medical evaluation and management. They are one important component of the comprehensive treatment of chronic pain syndromes.
