Health and Rehabilitation Psychology

Health and rehabilitation psychology is a specialty within psychology involving assessment and intervention services for individuals with disabilities or medical conditions. Rehabilitation and health psychologists usually work collaboratively with medical doctors, other rehabilitation professionals (e.g., physical therapists, occupational therapists), social workers, and family members with the goal of maximizing patient well-being and functioning, despite physical or cognitive limitations.

Services may include assessment and diagnosis is as well as individual, group, and family treatment. A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation may be pursued for a variety of reasons, including treatment planning (cognitive rehabilitation, psychotherapy), evaluation of treatment effectiveness (e.g., following antibiotic treatment for Lyme disease), work capacity, assessment of total or partial disability, and screening prior to surgical intervention (e.g., for chronic pain, bariatric surgery). Treatment may include cognitive rehabilitation (e.g., following stroke or traumatic brain injury), neuron-biofeedback, individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, supportive counseling for family members, and/or family counseling.
