Cognitive Rehabilitation Individuals with brain injury, stroke, or other neurological conditions often experience changes in thinking, concentration, memory, organization, sequencing, and carrying out basic tasks that were once second nature. These changes often are disruptive to individuals and their families. Cognitive rehabilitation, or “physical therapy for the brain,” involves restoration of functions that can be restored and learning to compensate for functions that cannot be fully restored. An individual course of cognitive rehabilitation is guided by a careful analysis of the nature and severity of neuropsychological symptoms experienced. Only through a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation can a specific, individualized treatment plan be formulated. Generally, sessions are highly structured as patients learn to simplify large problems into smaller more manageable ones.
